Being

We are so busy “DOING” that we often miss out on taking time to just “BE”.
We often, having decided to devote some time to meditation, have trouble getting around to actually meditating.  A frequent obstacle to meditation is the feeling that we are neglecting some important activity.  We are programmed and encouraged by our society to “accomplish” things.  Meditation sometimes can feel like we are robbing ourselves of time for accomplishments.  One of the great paradoxes of meditation is that time spent in meditation can help us to become more effective in the “doing” parts of our lives, but our meditation is undermined and disrupted when we aim our meditation on preparation for doing.

When we take time to “just be” for a time, then our focus becomes much more clear about the things that are really worth doing, and we recognize that so much of our “doing” has been either a “striving after the wind”, or an attempt to distract ourselves from uncomfortable or disturbing thoughts and feelings.   Many of the guided meditations encourage and evoke a sense of “being” in this current moment, and there will also be guidance on how to recognize, receive, and set aside the perceived urgency of the things that keep us too busy.  And learning how to sit with discomfort can help us to let go of the busyness that is aimed at escape.
